I was always a sun worshipper - it was a learned behavior early on in my life. As a teenager with acne, the only time my skin looked its best was during the summer months when I got a lot of sun exposure. Then, as I got into my 20s, and I put on those few pounds that we all seem to gain when we go off to college, I discovered another reason to be a sun worshipper - "tan fat looks better than white fat".

Of course, when I got into medical school, then into my general surgery and plastic surgery residency training programs, I learned the evils of the sun. UVA and UVB rays from the sun promote "photo damage" or premature aging of the skin, and it increases the risks of developing skin cancers, including melanoma. This revelation was devastating to me because I had learned to love the sun and what it did for me - I looked better and therefore I "felt better" with a tan.

As a plastic surgeon in private practice, I see the many ravages of the sun in my patient population. While it may not be the "perfect tan" that you are used to getting with natural sun exposure, it is a lot safer to your skin.
